STEM Week FINAL DAY!

Friday was the last day of the fabulous Stem Week, however we were all sad that it was the last day of school (not)! It started off as every house doing their own activity. I was in Woodside House, with the house captain Mr Griffiths. We did a beautiful sunset in a forest. I hope you like mine! See above!

And that my friends was the last day of the fabulous Stem Week. - Monty

Today was the last day of our S.T.E.M week! We split into our houses, and each did some artwork about our diverse planet.

In Victoria, we drew some animals for a display. They came from different habitats, hence ‘our diverse planet’. The different habitats were: Rainforest, Savannah, Woodland and desert. In Victoria we drew a wide variety of animals, such as toucans, the rare white tiger,  panthers, gorillas, lions, giraffes and many more.

In Cleveland, we drew people from all over the world, and put them on a world map. We were put into different groups and each one did a different country, fitting into ‘our diverse planet’. Some of the countries done were: USA, Australia, UK, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Canada and Africa. - Anisa & Shreya

Out of the entire week, we have a great time learning about different S.T.E.M subjects. I would say our favorite thing we did was when we went to the woods to create the mason bee homes and went on a scavenger hunt, learning lots about them in the process. Overall, we have had a great week!

STEM Week Day 4

When I got in in the morning the teachers had set up an escape room. There were eight different activities that we had to complete to unscramble a word. The word was stem week. After the escape room we planned a debate about a famous quote  Stephen Hawkings said, “I am convinced that humans need to leave earth.” Mr Griffiths was the adjudicator and there was an affirmative and a negative team. Even though it was a close debate the negative team won and it has been another brilliant day of Stem Week. - Harry

In the morning we did an escape room which was really fun. We did all kinds of games, like emoji maths and word searches, at the end of all of the puzzles ( there were 8 in total) you had to unscramble a word which was stem week. Then we planned a debate which was about leaving earth. And then at 2 o'clock we had a debate and we had to argue about leaving earth or staying on earth. The people who were arguing to try and stay at earth won by 9 points. - Louis

STEM Week Day 3

To start off the day we learnt how you can float better in saltwater than lake water. To help explain we did an experiment: we got 3 glasses of water and put 2 scoops of salt in one 4 in one and 0 in the other. The egg ,which we were making float, only managed to float in the cup that had 4 tablespoon of salt.

Next we did another experiment to see how many Fungiform Papillae (taste buds) we had. I had 15 and that meant I had very good active test buds! After break, we went into the hall to have a video call with a lady whose job was a chemical engineer! Then we had lunch. Then we had a call from another lady who looked after the A19! Then it was the end of another fab STEM the day! - Ava

Wednesday was the third day of the fantastic Stem week  and its thrilling adventures .  It all started when we were told to find out about how the dead seas swimmers can float in that environment. We then experimented on eggs to see how they float depending on how much salt is in the water. We painted our tongue to see our taste buds by using food colouring  to see if we fit in these categories which we all fit into however  we found out which ones we were in, we had to use a holepunched paper, our tongues, our taste buds or scientifically known as fungiform Papillae and food coloring. The majority of the class was either a taster or a non taster, to fit into these categories we have to have a certain amount of taste buds which appear when we eat. Fewer people were supertasters.  After we had a virtual meeting. We learned all about what a civil engineer is and what they do.  This is to introduce more opportunities for us to see what job we want to pursue when we are an adult. Next we had another meeting which instead was with a chemical engineer. It was a great day! - Hadi

STEM Week Day 2

In the morning, we did a bee crossword whilst watching videos about bees to learn more. Once we finished we went outside with Mr. Griffiths to plant some borage to attract bees, we each planted a pot then watered them, we put them in the sunlight to help them grow. Afterwards we decided to do a bee role play about what a bees life style is, we selected roles and learned about what they do. Once we finished the roleplay we went into the woods with Mrs. Hopkins. We went around the woods writing down facts about bees then we made a home for the mason bees since they are starting to go extinct. We found leaves, dry mud and moss to fill it up and decorate then Mrs. Hopkins gave us some bamboo so the mason bees can hide inside. Once we finished we got to take them home to hang up outside our house. - Anisa

In the morning, we found out that today we would do lots about bees, while doing a bee crossword. We started by finding out a bit about them, and their population is decreasing rapidly, due to a type of mite. After, we found out we were going to do a role play in the afternoon representing the life of bees in a hive. Then we went outside to plant a plant called borage, known to attract the insects. Later in the day, we did our role play about the life of bees. Workers getting nectar and providing for the hive, and the queen bee with the baby bees, while the mite, which is the cause of a lot of the deaths of bees, killing off the hive, causing lots of them to die out. After that, we went into the woods to do some activities about them. We did a scavenger hunt, finding out lots of interesting facts about them, and then made a house for a type of bee, with lots of places for them to hide in, which we can hang up in our gardens. And that was the end of our bee themed day! - Shreya

STEM Week Day 1

Upper Prep 2 have been exploring the wonderful diversity amongst us! We started with an assembly all about Autism before moving on to explore the differences with our class itself. We did this by making life sizes pictures of our partners! In the afternoon we looked at the different Ph's of various liquids before designing our own species for a specific habitat! A great start to the week!

Shreya's Monstrous Poem!!

The alien that ordered a takeaway

The alien that ordered a takeaway,

Thought he was in for a treat,

He dialled the number, 3125,

and asked for something sweet.

“Lizard sundae,” said a low pitched grunt,

A gasp came down the phone,

“L-Lizard?” came a tiny squeak,

She sounded chilled to the bone.

“That’s what I said!” The creature grunted,

Now what else should I buy?

Snail tacos please!

Don’t forget the double fries!

“Search the dustbins!” The lady screeched,

“For lizards and snails galore!

How will you pay for all this?”

The alien though and pondered some more.

“I’ll pay when it gets here!” The alien bellowed

But really he had no clue,

His brain was filled with problems,

And felt like it was split in two.

The bike rumbled round the corner,

Shining red and bright,

He snatched his food,

And ran away, into the moon, glowing white!

The alien that ordered a takeaway,

Thought he was in for a treat,

He dialled the number, 3125,

and asked for something sweet.
